Barbara Wingate, MD has long been a champion for the integration of conventional and alternative healthcare treatments. This integration is essential for her longstanding traditional population of patients with complex medical and  psychiatric concerns, a group she is comfortable treating due to years as the consult liason psychiatist at the Hospital University of Pennslvania .  This approach also works well for the large number of us concerned with leading happier, healthier, more fully-lived lives, another significant portion of her clientele.

As a board-certified psychiatrist, Dr. Wingate is firmly committed to staying abreast of the most current psychiatric practices, including pharmaceuticals and new treatment modalities, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation . Well-connected in the psychiatric community, she collaborates with physicians from the academic and research communities.  

Dr. Wingate is certified in Kundalini yoga and meditation, which has been taught at the American Psychiatric Association's annual meetings since 2004.  She also operated her own yoga center from 2003-2007. Additional training with Jon Kabat Zinn and, most recently, her completion of Penn's Stress Management practicum to teach meditation, demonstrate her commitment to these important modalities.

A diplomat of the American Board of Integrative Holistic medicine since 2005, Dr. Wingate is comforable with the use of supplements, vitamins and amino acids to enhance traditional pharmaceuticals or minimize the need for them.  Her on-going participation in courses at Harvard and the Integrative Health Symposium  help her to determine safe and appropriate use of these supplements as  well as incorporate lifestyle changes into a personalized plan for mind-body-spirit health.

Dr. Wingate is a former medical Director(l991-93) and a recent consultant to the Renfrew Center. the first  nationally known treatment facility for eating disorders. Her on going teaching of psychiatry residents and medical students at the University of Pennsylvania  is a treasured part of her work.
